I can still remember the noise online on September 7, 2021, when Dead by Daylight Chapter 21: Hellraiser went live across all supported platforms. From my desk in 2026, I see that patch as more than a licensed killer drop. It was a structural reset for Behaviour Interactive's horror sandbox. It introduced Pinhead, replaced Ranks with Grades, and finally pushed skill-based matchmaking into the live game. The notes were massive, and I want to walk through what launched, what changed after the PTB, and why I still consider it one of the most consequential DBD updates.

The Cenobite and the Hellraiser Chapter
The headline was obvious. Chapter 21: Hellraiser brought a new Killer, The Cenobite, better known to horror fans as Pinhead. The Chapter was based on the Hellraiser franchise, and it leaned hard into that identity. Before launch, Behaviour Interactive said The Cenobite would receive tweaks to how his chains spawn, along with other adjustments. Some players had already tried him on PTB servers, but the full release brought the final version to everyone.
For me, the most interesting part was how the Chapter fit into Dead by Daylight's growing roster of licensed horror icons. Pinhead was not just another chase Killer. His puzzle box, chain hunt, and map pressure gave Survivors a new kind of dread. Even in 2026, I still meet players who say The Cenobite was the reason they finally tried DBD.
Skill-Based Matchmaking Goes Live
One of the biggest non-Killer changes was skill-based matchmaking. It did not arrive on September 7 with the rest of the patch. Instead, it was enabled separately on September 8 at 11:00 AM EDT. After being tested on and off for many months, the developers completed their tests and decided to implement the feature full time. This change went live for all players with Chapter 21.
I remember the debate around that decision. Some veterans worried about longer queues and sweatier lobbies. Others welcomed a system that could finally separate new players from veterans. Looking back from 2026, I think this was the moment Dead by Daylight stopped treating matchmaking as an afterthought.
Grades Replace Ranks
The progression overhaul was just as important. Grades replaced Ranks, and the system was broken into five groupings: Ash, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Iridescent. Each grouping had four sub-groupings: IV, III, II, I. Current Ranks were translated into corresponding Grades.
| Old Rank | New Grade |
|---|---|
| Rank 20 | Ash IV |
| Rank 19 | Ash III |
| Rank 18 | Ash II |
| Rank 17 | Ash I |
| Rank 16 | Bronze IV |
Grade Resets happened on the 13th of each month. All players were reset to Ash IV for both Killer and Survivor, regardless of their previous Grade. Bloodpoint rewards were given out when the reset occurred, based on the previous Grade. Crucially, it was no longer possible to lose enough pips to lose a Grade. That change alone made the monthly grind feel less punishing.
The Nemesis Update
The patch also included a balance pass for The Nemesis. I noted the changes carefully because they showed how Behaviour Interactive was willing to tune licensed Killers after release.
-
Movement speed while charging Tentacle Strike Tier 3 increased to 4.0 m/s, up from 3.8 m/s.
-
Shattered S.T.A.R.S. Badge effect duration increased to 60 seconds, up from 30 seconds.
-
Iridescent Umbrella Badge effect duration increased to 30 seconds, up from 15 seconds. The old value had been erroneously displayed as 12 seconds.
-
Ritual of The Nemesis reduced to reaching maximum Mutation Rate one time, down from 4.
The developer note explained that The Nemesis came out in a good state but was underperforming slightly in higher skill brackets. Those players tended to hit Mutation Rate 3 more often, so the buff was meant to give him a slight boost at that level of play. Two underperforming addons were also buffed, and the associated ritual became less of a pain to complete.
Quality of Life and Bug Fixes
The September 7 patch was not only about headline features. It also added useful quality-of-life changes. Match Results now notified players when they left a Trial with a Limited Item, such as The Nemesis's Vaccine, that they would not keep it. As the game put it, It has been consumed by The Entity. Large Text Settings were added, allowing players to enlarge all texts in the HUD for better readability. The Pallet also received a visual update.
The bug fix list was long. I scanned it and picked out the fixes that mattered most to me:
-
Killers could now hear several sounds for Survivors not currently visible on screen, including footsteps during the Spirit's phase walk.
-
A hitch when using Dead Hard was fixed, and Dead Hard's invulnerability was made to coincide with the dash effect.
-
Survivors could no longer keep some status effects, such as Lithe's speed boost, for the remainder of the trial.
-
The Doctor's bubble indicators now appeared when Survivors reached a new madness level, screamed in tier 3 Madness, or failed Snap Out of It skill checks.
-
Survivors could escape the trial even if Victor pounced on them near the exit gates.
-
Teachable perks bought in the shrine now unlocked correctly.
-
Survivor bots healed each other more reliably next to generators.
-
Player names containing a # no longer got truncated in game or on the tally screen.
-
Frame hitches when repairing generators or healing Survivors were fixed.
-
Blood Lodge and The Game maps were re-enabled.
There were also fixes for invisible collisions, stuck totems, hatch issues, generator repair angles, and a Cow tree on the Farm map that had no collision. The patch even addressed loss of progress, though additional issues were still under active investigation.
Known Issues at Launch
No major DBD patch launches cleanly, and Chapter 21 had its share of known issues. The Cenobite's power description was not using the latest version in all translated languages. The Chain Hunt activation audio notification played for all Survivors while a Survivor was holding the puzzle box. Some text relating to Grades and Grade Rewards had not been translated into non-English languages. The Dead Dawg Saloon map was disabled and planned to be re-enabled on 5.2.1. Players could not make progress on the Punch Drunk Achievement. It was possible to stun The Nightmare using a Dream Pallet. An upcoming Boon Totem description appeared in the Tutorials page. On consoles, the larger text setting did not save after restarting the application.
Why It Still Matters in 2026
Looking back from 2026, I see Chapter 21 as a blueprint. It combined a famous horror license with systemic changes that affected every match. Skill-based matchmaking, Grades, monthly resets, and Bloodpoint rewards all became part of the rhythm of Dead by Daylight. The Cenobite added a terrifying new Killer, while The Nemesis update showed that older additions would not be abandoned.
The patch was not perfect. It had bugs, translation gaps, and a disabled map. But it moved the game forward in a way that few Chapters have matched. For me, September 7, 2021, remains a date worth revisiting. It was the day Dead by Daylight embraced both its horror roots and its competitive future, and I can still feel that shift today.
