FCS
FLASH Activity: Get Set for Your Best Year Ever!
While
California’s Community Colleges are experiencing record enrollments, many
students are dropping out of courses or failing to earn passing grades. In
fact,
only 24 percent of community college students who intend to earn an
associate degree or transfer to a four-year school are successful in doing
so within six years. FCS instructors are serious about helping more
students succeed. To help meet this goal, this semester the FCS FLASH will
bring you ideas, resources, and easy activities to engage students and give
them some of the tools they need to become more successful.
Since the single most important factor in student retention, as reported in a national survey, was the concerned, caring attitude of faculty and staff, creating a warm and welcoming classroom environment is the best place to begin. In addition, when students have personal and meaningful contact with their instructors, the greater the chances that students will persist in their classes. Student retention is enhanced when teachers learn their students’ names, are available before and after class, and stop and talk to students around campus.
One thing we know about student success is that students who set goals, commit them to writing, and refer back to them, are much more likely to reach their goals than those students who do not set goals. To get your students on the road to success in your course, encourage them to set a goal and make it SMART. The activity outlined here will get them going.Do
this:
Ask some
questions about what students expect to get from your class.
Why are you
taking this class?
What do you expect to get from this class?
How are you going to succeed in this class?
Explain
that when students set goals for a course they do better in the class.
Distribute "Get
Set for Your Best Semester"
activity, review the directions, and have students complete the
exercise.
Share your goals and ask volunteers to share theirs.
Encourage students to save
this activity in their notebook and review it each week.
FYI:
…When
students succeed by completing a career certificate or a college degree,
they are far more likely to go on to lead productive lives.
